MIXED MEDIA MODERN ART

Objective
We have experimented with ways to express throufh our studies in the Modern Art Movement (expressionism , Abstraction, Dadaism and Surrealism). Moreover, we need to choose an metaphor and use whatever media studied in the course (paint, recyvled materials to create).

Photomontage form of collage that use fragments or photographs to paste onto a specific surface of paper. (Hannah Hoch created unique style called Photomontage!)
Ready made is add or edit something in artwork that alreay have done by others. (Marcel Duchamp used this technique and he ready- made of Mona Lisa ).
A metaphor is a word or phrase that is used to make a comparison between two people, things, animals, or places without use word "like" or "as". For example: Time is money, Life is a rollarcoaster.

Life is Fishing
Life is tree

Life is car

Brainstorm
Life is water
I chose life is fishing as my topic.

Concept
Metaphor- Life is fishing
What will you create? I will create a painting!
Style of Art- Abstraction (Displacement)
Material- I will use acrylic paints, white color string, and glitter glue.
Thumbnail Sketches
Final sketch and Revise
Practice
I practiced to make shadow inside the shapes also tried to paint fish!!

This is my final sketch I used mostly light colors and mixed bule with purple and green for some part of background to make my water look clear and pure.
Ms. Hwang said I need to make purple fish longer and for orange fish mixed some blue.

These are my tumbnail sketches. I got 2 ideas for my topic "Life is fishing". Moreover, I tried to sketches for other metaphors. (LIfe is tree, Life is wind)
The Making

Reflection
-
What Modern Art Movement has you chosen and why? Is there an artist or a practice in this movement that inspired you? Explain.
I chose abstraction modern art movement because abstraction was my favorite unit during grade 10 art class also other modern art style such as Dadaism, Expressionism and Surrealism were hard to understand for me but abstraction unit was not it was interesting and easy to understand. Moreover, after finish abstraction artwork I really wanted to repeat this assignment again because I enjoyed this unit a lot and I wanted to use more abstraction techniques in my artwork.
-
Is your final artwork a good representation of your metaphor? Have you used any materials that have enhanced the stylistic theories of your Modern Art movement? Provide a thorough and insightful description of your work and the concept behind it.
My final artwork is a good representation of my metaphor "Life is fishing". I compared our life to fishing because the situation is similar. When we go fishing, we want to catch many fish but sometimes we fail to catch. Similarly, In our life, we want to achieve our goals or get something that we want but it doesn't always work. I drew two fish that were caught by fishing rods and other two that failed to. It shows achievement and failure of goals. Like this situation, we can fail or success. Therefore, I compared fishing to success and failure in our life.
-
The white strings represent the path to success.
-
A fish represent the goals to achieve.
-
Have you shown used any of the Modern Art techniques in your artwork? Where? What is interesting about your art?
Since my art is about abstraction, I chose abstraction technique which is displacement. Therefore, I drew many shapes and lines with fishes to displace everything together.
The interesting things of my artwork are white rod because before people know message of my artwork, they will not know what it represent. Moreover, two fishes were swimming but other two fishes were catching by someone.
-
How did you use the Elements and Principles of Art in your design?
Line- I used smooth and mostly curvy lines in my artwork. (Pattern of fishes, shapes)
Color- I used warm color and cool colors but mixed white colors so I mostly used pastel tone of colors. Also I used to make shadow in background shapes.
Shape- I used many curvy shapes for background and patterns of fishes.
Space- I drew different size of 4 fishes. Also sizes of background shapes are different.
-
Do you like your final design? Why or why not? What could be done to change it?
I do like my final design because I think I create abstraction technique “Displacement”. I displaced all the shapes with fishes and lines (which represent fishing rod). Moreover, I really like color of background because it looked clear and pure water and created shadow well. I got better skill to create shadow in shapes because of practice and experience before during abstraction unit. In addition, I like idea that I used white strings and pasted on the lines to represent fishing rod. Before I paste white strings, my artwork looked kind of flat but after paste white strings, it looked much better and better to relate our topic mixed media. If I repeat this assignment again, I want to challenge to use more attractive mixed media and other modern art style to have more experience in art.
