Optical Illusion

This is an optical illusion artwork. When I just see this artwork, I  can see 4 shapes of human. However, when I move my eyes, I can see pillar instead of human shapes. The artist expressed positive space and negative space in this artwork. I think the pillars are negative space and human shapes are positive space because negative space is the space between an object and surrounding. Human shapes are located between pillars so it is positive space. Also the pillars are opposite to humans shapes so it is negative space.

Critical Inquiry

This is an optical illusion painting made by Rob Gonsalves called "The Performer and His Public". Rob Gonslaves used oil on canvas to create this artwork. Rob Gonsalves is a Canadian artist of magic realism with a unique and perspective style. He is born in Toronto, Canada in 1959. When he was young, he was interested to use various Medias. By the age of 12, he grew and learned perspective techniques and he began to create his first artwork. Many artists expressed fear in their artwork but Rob Gonslaves gives dreamlike feeling from his artwork.

This artwork reminds me of arcane village that has freedom because most of colors are between purple and blue, also the person who is playing the guitar shows freedom because he is playing the guitar freely. Moreover, it looks afraid because of human's face look like ghosts. After observing this artwork, I feel really relax and calm and thought an artist create this artwork very detaily because he drew position of human's faces differently by this I could know human's faces are looking a person who is playing the guitar. I have a question that where this idea comes from because I really like this idea.

By this artwork, I can see a man who is playing a guitar in the top of roof. It seems not really strange and weird but the eye illusion above except the fact that when I see the houses below that man who is playing guitar. At first, when I this picture fast, I just see as a group of normal houses in the city even I can see the roofs, windows and doors. Moreover, the houses looks standing each other and normal but when I see the picture more, I realized that there is not only a group of houses and could see human faces at the back. I think many human faces are looking at man who is playing the guitar and it seems they are watching a concert but when I just see this picture, I can see the houses not human faces. When I just see this picture, I can see the houses not human faces.

I think this artwork is successfully done because the artist expressed optical illusion very well also I really like the idea that he shows the group of houses look like human faces. Moreover, this artwork organized very well and has an exciting design of houses and an artist suppose to present the visual appeal of the subject. When I saw this artwork first time, I could see group of houses but at the back of houses looked so weird and strange because I could see houses differently as human faces.

Rorschach Technique

I did activity using rorschach technique in class. Roschach technique is put some paint on the paper and fold paper in half. After open the paper, you will see a shape or drawing.

For me, I can see a monster with very big hands beause it looks like kind of human's shape but has really big body, mouth and very little foot.  It looks like a monster!

Reflection:

PART A

What is your sculpture showing? Describe what it looks like using the terminology learned in class.

My sculpture is showing an optical illution of human face and wheels together to looks like a vehicle. It gives elements of surprise because when you see my artwork from a distance, you can see a vehicle because human's face and wheels connected together well. However, When you see closly, you can see two different objects.

What is your concept?

My concept is to make humans face with wheels to make vehicle. When we see human's face side-on, it looks like a vehicle after connect with wheels. This is optical illusion because when you see my artwork from a distance, you can see a vehicle because human's face and wheels connected together well. However, When you see closly, you can see two different objects.

Does your sculpture imitate the ideas of Surrealism? Does your artwork say anything about our society’s beliefs or concerns?

My sulpture imitate the ideas of surrealism because I created my artwork from my dream. My dream was about driving. I was driving a small car with my mother. This dream was really impressive to me so I chose topic as my dream and created person with car.

What are some clay building techniques you have used? Explain in detail.

  • Rotating- I used this techinique when I made wheels. I had to make round shapes.

  • Pinching- I used this techinique when I make wheels to make flat little.

  • Kneading - I used this techinique when I start to use clay because If I just use clay without this techinique clay would get air bubbles.

  • Scorinng- I used this techinique to connect clay together. I had to connect humans face on the top of the wheels so I scored on the shape that I need to connect together and used slip to connect stronger. After this I applied some clay on the section becauswe my clay will be more secured.

If you were to repeat this project again, what would you do differently? What would you do the same? Why?

  • If I repeat this progect again, I would do several things differently. Firstly, I will make plan faster to make enough time to work on clay because I didn't really have enough so I couldn't finish my artwork perfectly. Secondly, I want to make my clay more attractive and fancy. For this, I will make more texture and get better ideas. Lastly, I will more take care to use clay because when my clay become dry, I can't really use it.

  • If I repeat this progect again, I will continue to do several things that I've done. Firstly, I will follow clay rules. For example, use slip instead of just water. Secondly, I will continue to use many clay techniques that I have used such as kneading scoring and rotationg so my sculpture can develop well.

  • Has your sculpture returned to you the way you envisioned it to look? Explain.

My sculpture returned to me the way I envisioned it to look. I thought my sculpture would break              because I didn't have enough time to fix my sculpture. Moreover, I was so nervous about human's face      because it was long and thin but I needed to put on the top of wheels ( Needed to support strongly.)          After I got my sculpture that part was really strong and returned to me very successfully!

  • What are some areas of success? Some areas of weakness? What would you do to change it if you were to repeat the sculpture?

I didn't really have weakness areas because I didn't have things to connect together. I just need to             connect two thick wheels together and human's face on the top of wheels. I think I made really deep       score so my sculpture didn't break and successfully done. If I repeat this sculpture assignment again, I       will make more textures and make plan faster and more attractive.
