Research

Hilma af Klint

Hilma af Klint was a Swedish artist and mystic whose paintings were amongst the first abstract art. She belonged to a group called "The Five" and her paintings which resembled sometimes diagrams were a visual representation of complex philosophical ideas. I think her painting is really unique because many kind of lines and shapes looks different than real product. For example, I can see some flowers but they are not really look like a flower. Moreover, I like her colour choice because those colour are harmony.

Albert Gleizes

Paysage cubiste By Albert Gleizes (1914)

Albert Glezies was a French painter and theorist associated with the Cubist and abstract movements. He worked for several years in his father's fabric design studio, but began to paint on his own in an Impressionist style. He also helped to found a community of artist and writers based on the ideals of utopia socialism. Moreover, developed a more structural style and met artist Le Fauconnier and Metzinger, who were working on similar lines. He participated in the Cubist movement with Merzinger and painted Du cubism in 1912. He started to paint first abstract pitures in 1914 and most of his artwork retained some connections with figure or still life. This artwork is created in 1914 by Albert Gleizes. The title of this artwork is “Paysage cubiste”. This artwork made using oil on canvas. In addition, this artwork reminds me of a small village because I can see few houses and stairs. After observed this artwork I feel very relax because warm colors and cool colors harmony well and most of shapes are round. I wondered that why this artist drew circles with buildings because I don’t understand what

he is trying to show by these circles. Moreover, I’m not sure but I think he used fragmentation and displacement abstraction techniques in this artwork because this artwork looks like cut the small village drawing in small art pieces and paste together and all the pieces are not matching. Also he used rule of circle and triangle, warm colors and cool colors. I think the artist is trying to show darkness and brightness in our life.

I think this artwork is successful because this artwork organized well and has an exciting and great design. Moreover, it presents the visual appeal of the subject to me. I will use displacement abstraction technique in my artwork.

Concept

Thumbnail Sketches and Practice

These are my sketches. For the first one is about bird. I displaced bird's body parts (hands, wings, head..) Also I used technique that I learned from Grade 10 art. I really like the idea to use technique on the wings but I did not like other part of colors so I tried to create more sketches.

Final Sketch

This is my final sketch. I used lots of colors in my artwork because I wanted to show music is infinite. Moreover, color is infinite because we can make so many colors that we can't count by mixing. Most of colors are like pastel tone and light.

Revise

To improve my sketch, I asked friends and Ms. Hwang to get advice. Ms. Hwang said make gradation because it was look so flat. Also Seyoung and Claire also said make shadow or use any technique, so I add gradation and my artwork become much better than before.

Final Product

Reflection

1. What is the title of your painting and why have you given this title?

The title of my artwork is "Infinite" because as you can see my artwork is about Music. Music is infinite and I wanted to show infinite more so I used lots of colors and shapes with elements of music. It can show colors are also infinite, it has no limits. (We can make any color we want by mixing. )

3. How is this an ABSTRACTION-EXPRESSIONIST painting?

This is an Abstraction- Expressionist painting because it is unrecognizable also I used one of the Abstraction technique "Displacement" in my artwork. I mixed instruments with many shapes and displaced anywhere. Also I made instruments just part of shapes. I tried to people to find instruments between many shapes.

4. What inspired you to create this? How has it inspired you? How much has it inspired you?

The things that are infinite has no limits. I thought about it and Music and color comes up because we can make any colors and Music has no limits anything we can sing or play.

5. What media did you use and what techniques did you adopt?

I used acrylic paint on canvas. I didn't use any techniques but I expressed shadows in every shapes because when I just paint it without shadows, It looked very flat. After expressed shadows, it looked much better, attractive and animated.

6. Is this painting successful in your opinion and why?

I believe that this artwork us successful without several things. I think two good things are I displace instruments well and expressed elements of music. However, I feel not really successful about I didn't use any techniques in my artwork. I really wanted to use many techniques in my artwork because it was very interesting and I've never used it before. I didn't really sure that what technique I need to use in my artwork because it was kind of improper to use techniques. If I do this abstraction lesson in the future, I want to use techniques to make my artwork attractive and cool.
